Interview and Analysis

Oral History

The following is an interview with an Archaeologist.
Abdul Badi, 1954: Assumed Name

Interview

Q1:      Tell us how did you get interest in Archaeology?
In my childhood days, on holidays, my father used to tell us stories about the ancient times. I had my younger sister, and both of us were very keen to know about the past stories. Even though they were not real stories, but we used to listen them with a great interest. This was the time when I got interested in the field.
Q2:      From those stories to real interest, how did you develop that?
Inspired by the interesting myths our parents used to tell us about the past, whenever I used to go play with my friends, I used to discuss what my father used to tell. This was very interesting. Then when I grew up more, I started collecting the books about the history. My favorite subject in school was history only, and I used to top it. Then furthermore I did graduation about the same.
Q3:      What challenges did you face in your life?
Since my family support was always there, particularly I did not feel any challenging stuff in my life. It had been smooth all the way. The only problem was the war of 1973, that time of 1965-75, was a tough time. I wanted to go to UK for high school studies, but had to wait for 1 year or so and I could not move on.
Q4:      How was the experience of your alma mater in UK, tell us about it?
It was speechless experience. I studied form the UCL institute of Archaeology, one of the prominent institutes. I learnt about the world, as well as about UAE on my own.
Q5:      what you did after your study got over?
I started a part time job there, in one of the museums when I was studying. I did it with very interest, and after study got over I did the job on full time basis. Soon, I started as a lecturer there in UK.
Q6:      When was the time you came back to UAE?
I was offered to assist the 6 member panel, as one of the member with a responsibility of initiating Al Ain National Museum. This was the time I realized to get myself back here.
Q7:      How was your experience here?
It was very difficult first to gather about the information we needed. It was perhaps most challenging situation in my professional career. But, when we completed, and the Museum inaugurated in 1971, it was the perfect win like situation.
Q8:      In today’s date, children have little interests about the one you had. Can you explain?
Today, it is the modern age having technology as interest. The interest in stories is long gone. Children are interested more in computers, phones, play stations, etc. These fast evolutions had attracted children more.
Q9:      What is your opinion about it?
This definitely is very wrong. It is like living in a virtual world with only one positive aspect of connectivity. Children spend time on internet always and miss their golden time of childhood. Instead, they should get interested into the real things.

Q10:    What remedies do you suggest?
Childhood is the age when individual is introduced to the society. The parents should look upon the lifestyle of their children and should give them time. Involve them much more in the other activities like sports, arts, history as well can be the topic of interest. The society and the government shall also take care upon the fact, children can be made to have interests which older generation had, but the way should be the use of technology.

Analysis

Earlier generation, had the leisure of doing everything they want. Arts and history were the topics, in which children had interests. That time was not narrowed with only the technology, the way it is today. The interest which we acquire in our childhood can lead us a good and satisfied life. As of today’s date, children need to be guided by the society to have their approach in the right direction. The technology is a good invention but it should only be used as the tool to access the information and have the connectivity, which the earlier generation did not have. The parents, society, and the government should bring new ideas to develop the young generation’s talent, by guiding them and have let their lives as real as the earlier generation had. Because, according to the experience, the present generation has been living in the virtual world, which is a matter of concern as it has cons against the development of the personality, until and unless it is not utilized in fruitful manner.

Reflection of the case study

Planning

One day I entered the class and I saw Dr.Hedley, he said we have a project to be done which is we have to choose a club and visit it and make short video , interview and summary about that chosen club.

I felt that its hard at the beginning an I chose to visit Zayed cricket stadium with three of my colleagues (Abdulla Abdulrahman, Mohamed Gamal and Saeed Aljeaidi).

I chose to do a group project because I feel my self good with these guys in managing and dividing the work on the four of us, also I know what each one of them can do, so I can hand Dr.Hedley a great work.

I chose Zayed Cricket stadium because I thought that no one thought of it and I wanted to show something unique for my colleagues, also I wanted to share the video with my community because we hardly know about cricket.

Thursday 9th of April, me and my group met up in my home and we did the whole research, aslso collected all the needed information about the organization, such as contact person over there which is Mr.Shanawas ( Pakistanis ) and we called him to arrange a day for us to visit the club and make an interview with the CEO over there(Mr.Robert).

Analysis

When I met Mr.Robert I learned from him a lot. He said that this facility could be described as a sport stadium and it got an award of best cricket stadium in the Middle East.

Moreover, the purpose of this stadium is to carry out first class matches between different countries. Its a very ideal venue for sports, corporate events and concerts.

Mr.Robert helped us a lot in our interview but his answers were unexpected because actually I knew nothing about ZCS and he changed my mind about cricket and made me wan to try this sport and do more research about it ; "Cricket nowadays became billionaires investment and it is a big source of income in UAE and Europe mostly" Robert's said.

That information we collected from interview, web research and asking people about cricket, helped us to distribute it amongst people over there. we asked questions related to ZCS history and that goes to society title is LSS 3003 course. Then we asked, how cricket is played and information about is and that goes to sport part. Moreover, We saw and asked about the utilities over there and they had Gym, Squash and swimming pool and I can relate this to leisure.

 Reflection

For this case study which is making a video of a club and interview we needed to have so many skills such as communicating with others and being social (thanks God I have it) and I contacted Mr.Shahnawas and interviewed Mr.Robert as you see in the video.

Moreover, you must have photography skill and I have it also because I were capturing and making the video by my computer skills.

There were some highs and lows of the case study in the form of lack of time. However, despite having these obstruction we managed to understand various aspects of the stadium in the form of its outfield, infield, offside, onside, boundaries and pitch.

If we were to do this case study again, then we would take a prior appointment from the stadium management. Furthermore, we would edit our mistakes and we would be on time. Also, we will try to build a great video from Zero to hundred that everybody would remember it and it would stick in their minds for a long period of time.

Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium

The state of the art Sheikh Zayed Stadium is arguably one of the world's finest cricket grounds. It was opened in May 2004 and staged its first first-class match when Scotland played Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup that November.

With a capacity of 20,000 it has hosted a variety of international and domestic games, while it's proximity to the city – just 30 minutes drive from the Abu Dhabi Island City — makes it an ideal venue for sports, concerts and corporate events.

Cricket is one of the most-watched and most actively participated games in the UAE and Abu Dhabi Cricket Club (ADDC) is proud to be at the heart of it. With over 500 amateur matches played at the Zayed Stadium and ADCC grounds this season, we are confident that we can build on that success in future years.'' Shahnawas said ''

Apart from hosting several international matches in the last 12 months, which has introduced the world class facilities to millions across the globe, it has been the growth of the amateur competition in recent seasons that has been of great encouragement to all involved in cricket in the region.

Each season brings new advances and introductions to ADCC — the trial use of the pink ball at Zayed Stadium this year could lead to the first day/night Test match some time in the near future — and enables the club to improve its facilities, widen its appeal and work towards the common goal of providing everyone the opportunity of playing cricket.
